PUPILS from Canon Slade School and St Catherine’s Academy are celebrating after winning district titles at the under-13s handball championships.

More than 12 teams from around Bolton battled it out for the top honours.

Canon Slade girls beat Rivington and Blackrod in the final while St Catherine’s tasted success in the boys category after also beating Rivington and Blackrod.

Jessica Persson, England Handball development officer for Bolton, said: “It was great to see so many talented young people today. Some had played handball before and some had only just getting started.

“Everyone had a good time, I saw lots of smiles and some brilliant performances by the participants despite the very warm weather.

“The teachers and pupils were keen to continue building on the interest in handball in Bolton and hopefully we will see more local competition happen during summer and next term.”

Anyone interested in joining in the handball fun can just come along to Bolton St Catherine’s Academy Sports Hall, every Wednesday throughout the summer, running between 6.30-7.30pm.

The winners will represent Bolton at the Greater Manchester School Games on July 15.
