CHUNG-YONG Lee’s hopes of progressing to the knockout stages of the World Cup were looking bleak last night after South Korea lost 4-2 to Algeria.
The defeat left the Koreans bottom of Group H with just one point on goal difference behind Russia, who earlier in the day were beaten 1-0 by Belgium.
The Wanderers wide man, who was substituted after 64 minutes, will be on the plane home if South Korea fail to beat Belgium in their final group game in Sao Paulo on Saturday and even then they could still be eliminated, depending on the result of the Algeria v Russia game in Curitiba on the same day.
Algeria became the first African team to score four goals in a World Cup final tournament as it rained goals in Porto Alegre.
They led 3-0 at half time with goals from Islam Slimani, Rafik Halliche and Abdelmouene Djabou.
South Korea hit back through Son Heung-Min but Yacine Brahimi restored Algeria’s three-goal advantage before Koo Ja-Cheol scored the Korean’s second.
Earlier Divock Origi scored the only goal two minutes from time as Belgium beat Russia in Rio to top the group and secure their place in the last 16.
