TWO boxing club members from Bolton could be on the verge of greatness after rubbing shoulders with a British champion and also winning the best amateur competition in the country if not the world.

Whazier Pasha and Leanne Mitchell were joined by Blackrod coach Stuart Greaves to head to the Haringey Cup down in London last week.

The duo met Chris Eubank at the event had photographs taken with the WBO super-middleweight title holder.

Pasha was busy with three fights over the weekend to book his place in the final and then won on the big stage in the final.

Meanwhile, Mitchell had to overcome two days of anxious waiting after the weigh-in on the Friday before competing on the Sunday.

Greaves said: “There were more than 400 boxers taking part inthe event and it was great for them to challenge themselves aganst the best in the country.

“Whazier was in the under-20 bouts 71kg class while Leanne was the 75kg to 81kg.

“It was brilliant for them as Wazier got up at 6am and travelled down for the weigh-in before fighting at 10.30pm on the Friday night.

“He took on a tricky southpaw fighter and lost the first round and won the next two.

“Then he boxed another southpaw from Liverpool and he won unaminously on points.

“In the final, a lad from Northampton and you could see that he had fought three times in three days as he was getting tired.

“It is hard when you are living in a hotel but it just shows how fit and strong he was that he could get a result there.

“Meanwhile Leanne took on a difficult boxer from Iceland.

“In some ways it was hard for her because she had to watch what she ate after the weigh-in to keep to her weight for the bout. and eventually won despite a tough fight.”

It is the ideal preparation for the pair as they are targetting more success later this year.

Greaves added: “There is the national championships in October. Whazier has been a quarter-finalist twice before and this time we expect him to get to at least the final and probably trying to win it.

“Whazier has been sparring all over the place and of all the people he has boxed, quite a few have said that he is better than an under-20 fights boxer which is good for the future.

“Leanne will be in the same competition but in the 0-5 fights category and we have high hopes for her.”
