LEIGH Centurions returned to winning ways in the Kingstone Press Championship with a 30-0 home victory over Keighley in a game that will live short in the memory.

Whilst there were undoubted spells of class from the table-topping Centurions involving their five tries and a steely defence, there were also lots of mistakes.

Leigh took the lead after nine minutes when good passing from the returning Martyn Ridyard released Tom Armstrong who danced his way past several defenders before blasting over for his 11th try of the season.

Ridyard kicked the first of five goals and Leigh were soon on the scoresheet again when sprightly work by Bob Beswick saw him dart over and ground despite the attention of three defenders.

Keighley got forward but Leigh denied them and were soon over the line themselves when Jake Emmitt side-stepped a defender and passed inside for the onrushing Oliver Wilkes to ground virtually untouched.

Leading 18-0 at half-time the Centurions were looking for a good start to the second half but the contest descended into a series of scrums and penalties as neither side seemed able to keep control.

Leigh’s normally precise passing was a little off pace while the Cougars generally lost possession thanks to the hosts’ defence.

Eventually something had to give and when a Sean Penkywicz pass was palmed down, Liam Kay swept up and set Armstrong down the left wing.

He kicked forward and the chasing Gregg McNally did not even break stride to collect and ground his 14th try of the campaign in the 56th minute.

Leigh then put the game to bed 10 minutes from time when Beswick broke away in the middle and Ridyard supported to cross under the posts before completing his 14-point haul.
