CANON Slade pupil Niamh Robinson booked her place in the semi-finals of the 50m breaststroke tonight.

The 14-year-old was fifth fastest in her heat finishing in 33.28 and was just three seconds behind winner England's Sophie Taylor.

She followed in the footsteps of her mum Sue who represented the Isle of Man in 1990 at the Commonwealth Games.

Mum Sue said: "It was a great result and took a 0.7 second of her previous personal best which is phenomenal for one length.

"She is very excited and happy to have qualified for the semi-final.

"It was fantastic start to the Games for her."
