Pilkington’s heroics are not enough

CRICKET: In last Sunday's Anthony Axford Indoor Trophy first round matches at Bolton School, Kearsley overcame Astley Bridge and Horwich narrowly beat Westhoughton.

Ian Pilkington was the star batsman of the day, but even his undefeated 60 was not enough to take Westhoughton through to round two. They ended their 12 overs on 100-5, with Rick Parker having contributed a further 24, but Horwich reached their target with just two balls to spare having lost only one wicket. James Reynard and Peter Halliday were their leading run-scorers.

Against Astley Bridge, Kearsley accumulated what is thought to be a record total in the indoor competition, hitting a massive 184-1 from their 12 overs. McDonnell, Hamblett, David and Pete Morris, and Jordan Thornley all topped the 25 mark before retiring.

Astley Bridge made a spirited start to their reply, but the run-out of Rick Northrop came as a blow, and their innings subsided to 97 all out. Simon Entwistle's 25 was their top score, and occasional bowler Thornley took 2-14 from his three overs.

Tomorrow the first round is concluded as follows: 11am Farnworth SC v Tonge; 12.15pm Eagley v Bradshaw; 1.30pm Egerton v Walkden.
