FLIXTON aim to learn from last week’s mistake and put the prospect of becoming champions to the back of their minds in the last game of the season at Walshaw tomorrow.

The long-time leaders were denied winning their first Bolton Association title at home last weekend when they lost to Bury.

They could afford to lose that game as long as they got the five bonus points they needed to clinch top spot.

The team, including run-making gatsman Ashley Perry, fell one short, and captain Aiden Fetherston believes part of the reason was his team’s mindset on the day.

“I think we took it lightly, thinking it was just going to happen,” he said.

“We thought we would pick up five points and we didn’t do it.

“Now we need one point, and you never know what’s going to happen.”

And the 30-year-old captain, who has been at the club – which is just a 30-second walk from his home – for 20 years, says they will not make the same mistake again.

“We won’t take it so lightly this week. We have just got to go out there and play as we would normally.

“If we don’t we could potentially cause ourselves problems.

“If we just go out there looking for one point it would be quite negative and we have not been negative all season.

“We’ve got to just think about winning the game and hopefully the point will come.

“We’re a bit disappointed not to have won it on our own ground, but we didn’t do enough.

“We just need to go out and play our normal game.”
