WANDERERS are believed to have made experience of the Championship a key component in their search for a new manager.

Phil Gartside is currently whittling down a shortlist of names from more than 20 that had applied directly for the position by Monday and is believed to have held discussions with a small number.

And while the chairman has refused to comment publicly on speculation, it is understood he is looking for candidates who can hit the ground running after the international break – with two important games against Birmingham City and Charlton Athletic in the first few days.

Early favourite Phil Brown – currently in charge of Southend but who helped Hull to promotion via the play-offs in 2008 – claimed he had not been contacted by the club yesterday.

“There is always going to speculation about myself and Bolton, whenever the job comes up,” Brown, pictured, said on Talksport.

“I had 15 odd years there as a player and coach. We had some great times under Sam Allardyce. I’ve had no contact with Bolton Wanderers officially, though.

“All I’ve had is the media guys asking me the question. I’ve got a project here at Southend and I’m only 20 months in to that.”

Tony Mowbray, Chris Hughton, Malky Mackay and Dave Jones are all out-of-work managers who have recent experience of football in the second tier.

Neil Lennon is another man with experience North of the Border who is believed to be interested in the position.
