JOE Mason and Liam Trotter are ready to give Wanderers a double boost for this afternoon’s home clash with Brentford.

Neil Lennon revealed yesterday that both players could come into contention for his first home game in charge.

Mason has suffered no lasting effects of the hamstring strain that ruled him out of the midweek defeat at Charlton, while Trotter could come into the reckoning in midfield after a long spell out with a more serious hamstring problem.

There are doubts over Mark Davies’s involvement, however, with Lennon reporting the 26-year-old was still suffering some discomfort with a knee problem after travelling back from London in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

“He only got back at three or four o’clock,” explained the Wanderers boss. “We’ll assess it in training and see what we do.

“With the injury history we have to respect that and make sure he recovers well but is fit to play.

“He’s probably not had as much football as he’d like but I’ve got a good medical staff here who’d work with him 24 hours a day if necessary to get him on the pitch and make an impression.”

On-loan defender Chris Herd is still nursing an Achilles problem and is unlikely to feature.

If selected, Trotter would feature for the first time since the end of August when he limped out of the Captial One Cup victory over Crewe.

And Lennon is looking forward to taking a closer look at a player he has tracked throughout his time in management.

“I remember him as a boy at Ipswich and spoke to Roy Keane about him briefly,” he said. “Before I got the Celtic job I took the development team and we played a bounce game down at Portman Road.

“Liam looked very good – a big, physical, imposing specimen if you want to cal him that. He can handle himself.

“By all accounts he’s trained very well after the injury he had so that gives us a shot in the arm. We need as many talented players fit as possible in this run we’re going through now.”
