WANDERERS legend John McGinlay believes old pal Tony Kelly’s charity efforts have helped stoke the sense of goodwill sweeping round the town.

Kelly’s 50-mile walk, completed just before Saturday’s 3-1 win over Brentford, had raised nearly £2,000 at last count.

And that combined with the instant progress being made by Neil Lennon since his arrival at the Macron has left McGinlay hoping the good times could be on the way back for his former side.

Ex-Scotland international McGinlay said: “People are really pleased to see things happening that spread the goodwill from the football club. That is the Bolton Wanderers of old, not just in Tony’s case but out there on the park as well.

"Everything is on the up. Having that presence in the town, trying to help, is important because it is a two-way street.”

McGinlay joined Kelly on the final leg of his journey from Merseyside, walking from the Burnden Park pie shop to the Macron.

McGinlay joked: “Tony kept telling me he needed to refuel, so he had a couple of pies. That body of his does not run on fresh air.

"He was pleased to see some supporters there too, and that put a smile on his face. It is a great achievement because he has been through some tough times in recent years."
