WANDERERS' production line continues to prove profitable with yet another academy graduate cutting his teeth at first-team level against Leeds United on Saturday.

Teenager Tom Walker's cameo appearance late on in the 1-1 draw at the Macron Stadium was the second debut in as many games for youngsters who have come through the Whites' ranks following Zach Clough's scoring heroics in the FA Cup win against Wigan seven days earlier.

Both Walker and Clough were in the same successful under-18s side that made it all the way to the quarter-finals of the FA Youth Cup in 2013, beating Tottenham 8-4 away in the process.

And they have joined Tom Youngs and Chris Lester in progressing to the senior ranks from that team after the duo made their first-team debuts under former boss Dougie Freedman last season.

To have four make the grade is a huge plus for the work done by the coaches at the Eddie Davies Academy in Lostock and the Class of 2013 have rightly made U18s coach David Lee proud.

Not only have four graduated at the Macron Stadium but several others from that squad are playing professionally elsewhere.

Goalkeeper Jan Ole-Sievers is back in his native Germany with Kaiserslautern in the Bundesliga second tier while Liam Gibson has a professional contract at Stockport County, Sam Bailey is playing non-league football and Elliott Newby has spent time at Aston Villa and more recently on trial at Millwall.

And Lee admits it is testament to those players and the staff at the academy who have also put the likes of Joe Riley, Josh Vela, Oscar Threlkeld and Andy Kellett on their career path at Wanderers.

Lee told The Bolton News: "There was a lot of talent in that team and it has been proven with so many still playing.

"To have four make it to the first-team at Wanderers is fantastic and credit to everyone involved at the club, academy and the players themselves.

"It was a nice surprise to see Tom get his debut at the weekend but full deserved.

"He has been training with the first team for a few weeks and has a lot of talent.

"Like Zach, he works hard and has a level head and has been at the club since the age of nine.

"For those two to get their debuts shows the manager has faith in them and that is great for us at the academy as well."

Salfordian Walker netted a hat-trick in that glorious FA Youth Cup victory at Tottenham two years ago when Lee's young Wanderers put eight past Spurs on their own patch at White Hart Lane.

Youngs also hit a treble while Clough and Lester weighed in with goals too.

Unfortunately, there was last-eight heartache in the next round when Wanderers lost 3-2 in extra-time at Nottingham Forest.

The quartet have all made their bow in the past two campaigns with 19-year-old Walker the latest of the crop to taste first-team action.

Boss Neil Lennon is a fan of the young wide man, although he admitted after the Leeds clash he had hoped to wait before throwing him into senior football.

But he is confident Walker, like Clough, is one for the future.

Lennon said: "He’s (Walker) a young lad and he’s done really well.

"At the end of the day it’s not ideal. The team is getting younger at the minute.

"He’s a good player, though, we like him, it’s just we’ve had to throw him on a wee bit sooner than I would have liked.

“He was all right for the time he was on the pitch and he’s one for the future."
