AS Wanderers handed Liverpool a bloodied nose in the FA Cup – Neil Lennon told fans: “That one’s for you!”

After his side scrapped hard to earn a home replay, which could be worth another £500,000, the Northern Irishman beamed with pride at what he described as one of the best results of his managerial career.

It ended goalless on Merseyside as Adam Bogdan led an incredible defensive display, setting up a mouth-watering rematch at the Macron next week which is sure to be the hottest ticket in town.

Lennon dedicated the performance to both the 5,500 supporters lucky enough to make the trip, and those who crammed into the pubs and clubs around the town in Bolton – insisting “It’s not over yet.”

“I can’t speak highly enough of the supporters,” he told The Bolton News. “When you go to grounds like this, they can give you that little bit of extra lift.

“They sang, they were with us the entire way. You could see that emanating onto the pitch.

“It was just a great day for the whole club – me, the players, the people back at home.

“And the chairman is delighted. He was a bit emotional after the game and for anyone, I’m pleased for him. It’s another decent pay day for us.

“We’re not getting carried away, I won’t do that, but we’ve given ourselves a chance and maybe a better one.

“They will be up for the game, even though it might not be one Brendan (Rodgers) needed under the circumstances.

“But it’s one we will relish. We’ve given ourselves a chance and I can’t ask any more from any of them.”

Liverpool’s team cost a combined £129million, compared with a Whites line-up in which only two players – Matt Mills and Tim Ream – were signed for a fee.

But Lennon was happy to play the underdog, and cited his old mentor Martin O’Neill as a master of getting results on just such an occasion.

“He was a master of that at Leicester,” he said. “He built a real quality side on limited finances and we gave a lot of teams a bloody nose.

“Part of that was his man management and how he created that spirit within the camp and that is what we are trying to do here.

“We don't have the quality of these teams but we do have an inner strength now which probably wasn't there before.”
