WANDERERS under-18s failed to complete a Merseyside double when they fell to a 2-0 defeat at Everton on Saturday.

After thumping Liverpool 6-4 at Lostock seven days earlier, David Lee’s youngsters could not repeat their scoring touch at the Toffees academy and remain rooted to the bottom of the FA U18 Premier League North Group table.

The hosts began brightly but then Wanderers came into the game and Will Abbotts fired just wide of the post.

They also had penalty appeals turned down when it looked like Enock LIkoy-Elumba had been brought down in the box.

It remained goalless at the halfway stage but the hosts enjoyed a moment of good fortune to edge ahead early in the second period.

Nathan Broadhead cut in from the left and fired a shot on goal that deflected off George Newell and past George Dorrington in the Bolton goal.

It gave Everton confidence and Dorrington had to be alert to save from Jordan Thorniley’s header.

The game was sealed with just under 20 minutes to go when Harry Charsley netted from 25 yards after collecting James Yates’ cross from the right.

It was disappointing for the young Whites but coach David Lee was again encouraged by their performance.

Lee said: “We dominated the first half with some good high pressing, forcing them into mistakes.

“We conceded in the second half to a very unlucky deflected shot and then to a very good 25-yard strike.

“There was nothing between the teams throughout the second half, other than them taking the important chances.”

The young Whites are back on home turf on Saturday when they host Sunderland at Lostock, kick off 12.30pm.
