ATHERTON Town proved that anything the club's first team can do, they can do better.

While the senior side were storming to a 6-1 win in the Manchester League thanks to a four-goal haul from Gaz Shaw, Stuart Rudd was netting four times for the over-35s as they powered to a 10-0 win against Cheers Bar.

The victory, which also included a Dave Fashou hat-trick and a goal apiece for Lee Neal, Darryl Martinez and Gary Peachy, sent Atherton top of Division One.

The game between fourth-placed Salford Waggon and bottom club North Walkden also produced 10 goals, but it ended 8-2 to Salford.

Mark Morris and John Morrison scored for Walkden and they netted another, but at the wrong end.

David Beaumont scored a hat-trick for Salford and Stephen Hughes scored twice, while Barry Massey and Brian Love added one each.

Moorside Ranger kept pace with the leaders after two goals from Tony Wheall and one from Matt Little gave them a 3-0 victory over Astley Bridge. They remain just three points behind Atherton but with a game in hand.

Old Boltonians edged their match at bottom side PF Bury, claiming a 2-1 victory. Mark Evans scored for the home side with Andy Blackburn and Tony McCann on target for the visitors.

Failsworth Home Guard and Ainsworth B could not be separated in a 4-4 draw in Division Three. Dan Stokes and Andrew Slack each scored a brace for Failsworth while Steve Keane, Dean Barnes, Jimmy Bamber and Mickey Jefferson ensured Ainsworth a share of the spoils.

Breightmet United edged out Whitefield Cons in a nine-goal thriller to stay top by one point.
