WANDERERS head to Rotherham with more attacking problems for Neil Lennon after Emile Heskey became the latest forward to be added to the casualty list.

Lennon confirmed yesterday the veteran front man will miss tonight’s trip with a hamstring problem and could be in the treatment room for up to three weeks, depending on the outcome of a scan.

Heskey limped off before the hour mark of his return to former club Liverpool in Saturday’s FA Cup fourth round draw, but is now likely to miss next week’s replay.

With Craig Davies and Zach Clough also out with similar muscle injuries, the more pressing concern is tonight’s clash against the Millers with only Eidur Gudjohnsen and youngster Conor Wilkinson the fit options up front.

Lennon could have reinforcements in by the end of the week in the shape of Cardiff’s Adam Le Fondre, who is expected to arrive before Saturday’s home game against Wolves.

But that does not solve tonight's attacking quandary, with Lennon joking he may call on another veteran to don the White shirt again.

Lennon said: “Emile won't be fit. It’s a hamstring and he's having a scan to see what the extent of the damage is but it doesn't look great.

“I'll be ringing up John McGinlay to see if he fancies a game.

“To say we're down to the bare bones is an understatement.

“With Emile, it depends on the length of time. If it's three weeks then he'll miss the cup replay.

“It's looking that way at the minute but we'll keep our fingers crossed.

“Craig Davies will be a couple of weeks. He was fit but obviously not 100 per cent.

“Clough could be fit for the weekend, he's almost there.

“Zach was feeling stiff and should've reported it really but he didn't want to as he was on a high, while Craig's injury is a recurrence of a hamstring.”

Lennon does not think the spate of muscle injuries is down to anything other than bad luck in the cold winter months

He does admit, however, that he has been forced to play both Heskey and another veteran, Eidur Gudjohsen, more than he expected in such a short space of time.

He added: “I didn't want to start with Emile and Eidur up front on Saturday but it was a case of needs must.

“The other option was (Conor) Wilkinson and I felt it was a bit early in his career to lead the line against Liverpool, although he came on and did very well in the second half.

“The injuries are killing us but we're getting results and that's the most important thing.

“We monitor training but we play a high tempo sometimes and the game was very demanding on Saturday.

“We're no different to any other club – the big clubs have heavy injury lists as the winter months come in.

“We just have to try and avoid it as much as possible.”

The impending arrival of Le Fondre would certainly ease concerns up front and Lennon believes the Stockport-born forward will be a good addition when his loan is sealed.

He added: “We’re hoping that will be concluded this week.

“He’s a player I’ve admired for a long time. He has a great goalscoring record at every level – even in the Premier League.

“He’s the type of player we need. I need a box player.

“The amount of chances we create and don’t convert – I think Adam will benefit from that.”
