BEING in charge of one of the area’s best-known leagues is a challenging job.

But each week, Warren Barlow gives a unique insight into the goings-on behind the scenes in the Bolton, Bury and District Football League in his own column.

This week, he discusses one of the exciting initiatives which is just around the corner for the junior clubs...a summer league.

LAST Monday was a surreal day which will live long in the memory.

At 9am, Gary Russell, the league's general secretary, Kevin Davies and I met at Moss Bank FC with a bag of plastic cones in order to see how many pitches we could realistically get on the land opposite the club's pavilion, across the road on Captain's Clough, and on the other side of Moss Bank Way, adjacent to Johnson Fold School.

The weather was not good as it was the stuff that gets you soaked through, as Peter Kay would say, as the drizzle was relentless

The council tractor driver who was rolling the pitches at the time must have thought we also looked a bit strange striding out and dropping cones all over his newly rolled pitches.

We left the site around 11.30am after completing our task. And although we were cold and wet, we were extremely satisfied with what we had achieved, which all bodes well for our summer programme.

Later that day I received a call from a gentleman from Florida who wants to meet up with the committee, but sadly he is coming to Bolton and we won't be making the trip to the States.

I then had a fruitful conversation with Bolton Wanderers chairman Phil Gartside with regards to our summer programme and our continued partnership with Bolton Wanderers.

After all that, I was contacted by Nick Levett, at the Football Association, who is really keen to know what we are doing in the BBDFL and how we are managing to continually grow and improve the grassroots football landscape in this area.

Last, but certainly not least, my son travelled with seven other representatives of the FA's referees association to officiate at the Dallas Cup.

He is maintaining a blog of his experiences which can be read by visiting http://mikedallascup2015.blogspot.co.uk/?m=1

So not your usual day, but one that makes me smile just thinking about it.

n Warren will return next week with all the latest information and issues affecting the league.

If you cannot wait that long check him out on @bbdjfl on Twitter.
