EIDUR Gudjohnsen has opened the door for a new deal with Wanderers by saying: “I’m not thinking about retirement.”

The Icelander provided a last-gasp equaliser for the Whites against Blackpool on Saturday to cap off the perfect week.

Gudjohnsen had scored on his international return and then was present in Barcelona as his wife gave birth to their fourth child, a baby daughter, on Wednesday.

And while his busy week means he has not had time to talk contracts with Bolton, the 36-year-old dropped the biggest hint yet that he is ready to commit to another year with the club.

“I don’t ‘have’ to play on, but in my mind I’m 100 per cent sure I’ll play next season,” he told The Bolton News.

“My contract hasn’t really been top of my priority list, if I’m being brutally honest.

“When the time is right we’ll talk about it. I’m sure we’ve got enough time to be able to look towards next season.

“If I look at the situation I’m just so glad I’m here, doing this day-to-day, feeling alive again after a difficult summer.

“A lot was going through my mind back then and the right situation had to come up for me and my family – coming here was absolutely the right decision.

“We’ll see where it takes us but retirement seems far, far away at the moment.”

Neil Lennon makes no bones about wanting Gudjohnsen to stay at the Macron next season and also wants fellow veteran Emile Heskey to consider a longer stay.

“Eidur has had a glittering career but this week will be up there with any of them,” he said. “He scores for his country at 36, has a baby and scores a late equaliser that feels like a winner. He is a fantastic role model and great signing.

“I don't know if there would be interest from anywhere else but we would to have him for another year; if we can talk Heskey into it as well. It is just how we manage them.

“Eidur looks good. Emile is bit older and takes more of the hits. You have to look after him at times but Emile has been fantastic for us as well.”

Gudjohnsen will be in the squad for today’s trip to Cardiff City where Lennon has pledged to make a handful of changes to his starting line-up.

Adam Le Fondre is not allowed to play against his parent club, which is likely to mean a start for Emile Heskey, while Dean Moxey and Liam Trotter are also expected to come into the equation against the Bluebirds.

The Wanderers boss feels his side can head to South Wales in confident mood, having snatched a point at the death against Blackpool which banishes any lingering thoughts of relegation.

“We go to Cardiff in better frame of mind than we might have done but for last minute goal. I think we are okay in terms of staying up; 10 points with a massive goal difference but another couple of wins wouldn't do us any harm.”
