A BOLTON schoolgirl picked up a spot on the podium and also broke a host of records against a star-studded field at the British Swimming Championships in London.

Canon Slade School pupil Niamh Robinson swam in four events and among her impressive performances included reaching the junior finals in three of them.

Proud mum Sue Brown said: "British swimming will be choosing a team from the results at this competition to represent GB in Baku, Azerbaijan at the first European Games.

"To be in with a chance of selection, swimmers had to achieve qualifying times in each of their races.

"On Day One she took part in the 200m breaststroke and qualified third for the final with a time of 2:34:29.

"She was third in the final with a new personal best of 2.33.19 and that was a new Isle of Man junior and senior long course record.

"Unfortunately she just missed out on the European Games qualifying time by 1.3 second."

On the next day, Robinson was in action in the 200m individual medley and again qualified third for the final but she touched down outside the medals in 2:20:27.

Brown added: "She was slightly disappoint at the time as it was just off her personal best and she missed out on the European Games time by 2.5 seconds."

Robinson showed no signs of fatigue on the third day in the 100m breaststroke by qualifying fourth from the heats and maintained that position in the final in another personal best time of 1:10:59 which was also another Isle of Man junior and senior long course record.

There major disappointment was that her time was 0.3seconds outside the qualifying time for the European Games.

On the final day, she finished 16th in her age-group in the 400m individual medley.

Brown added: "Niamh has had a great week down here at the Olympic Park in London and would like to thank her school for their support in allowing her to attend along with her sponsors Grace Cole Ltd and TP Properties."

Her appearance at the British Swimming Championships was just another chance for Robinson to show off her talents as last year we reported about her appearing at the Commonwealth Games in Scotland.
