JOHAN Mjallby believes Wanderers can sever ties with a handful of players this summer with a clear conscience.

Neil Lennon is preparing to clear the decks after a season of under-achievement and will start with his retained list, which should be announced in the next few days.

Among the big names set to leave in the summer are popular keeper Andy Lonergan and big earner Jermaine Beckford, who is currently on loan at Preston North End.

Lennon is preparing to be ruthless as he continues to cut the wage bill and has already warned that some of the more injury-prone members of his squad could be moved on as he looks for more durability next season.

Assistant manager Mjallby insists there have been no snap decisions taken on who to release this summer, with each player given an ample opportunity to show they can be part of Lennon’s plans.

“That’s the way it is,” he told The Bolton News. “We want players in, we know there will be financial restraints and that it won’t be easy.

“A few players are probably going to be disappointed that we’ve had to let them go. But that’s part and parcel of the game.

“Most of them have had chances to show us if they are good enough in our view to play and bring success to Bolton.

“They have had a chance to show their worth. We’ve got a good idea what they can bring to the table.”

Craig Davies’s situation remains unclear.

Though Lennon has stated publicly he would “love to” sign the Wales international again next season, his desire to fashion a more robust squad does not count in his favour.

The former Barnsley striker made 30 appearances for the club this season, scoring seven goals, and has become a cult figure on the terraces. But his hamstring problems mean he has strung together five games in a row just once in his two-and-a-half years at the club.

“It's definitely something we need to contemplate," Mjallby said earlier in the month.

“It's important for us in the future and the club as well that we have players who are going to be able to play 30-plus games because this is a tough league – with 46 games.”

There is good news for young defender Quade Taylor, who has been offered a new deal to remain at the Macron next season.

The former Crystal Palace trainee arrived on a one-year contract last summer and made his first-team debut against Birmingham City on Saturday.

Emile Heskey, Eidur Gudjohnsen, Matt Mills, Adam Bogdan and Darren Pratley have all been offered new contracts next season.
