WANDERERS will be on their travels again in pre-season after the club confirmed the programme of friendlies prior to the Championship's big kick off on August 8.

Neil Lennon's Whites will first travel to Austria for a training camp in early July with the possibility of training games during their stay.

They will then head home for four games against lower league opposition before rounding off pre-season with a traditional final home match at the Macron Stadium – though no opponent is yet confirmed for that fixture on Friday, July 31.

Before that, Wanderers will travel to Morecambe on Friday, July 17, Oldham Athletic on Tuesday, July 21, Scunthorpe United on Friday, July 24 and Port Vale on Tuesday, July 28.

The first game for fans to see the team back in action comes at Morecambe's Globe Arena.

The two sides have never met competitively but Owen Coyle's Whites did visit three years ago – again in a pre-season friendly.

They ran out 2-0 winners on the night thanks to early goals from Chris Eagles and David Ngog inside the first 11 minutes.

It was a boost for Coyle after relegation from the Premier League the previous May, particularly after four winless friendlies prior to the trip to the seaside that had caused some concern amongst supporters.

This will be Wanderers second visit to the base the Shrimps have called home since 2010. They had been scheduled to be the first visitors that year but a delay to the official opening saw the July friendly cancelled.

Instead, Wanderers made the short trip to Oldham on that date – their second opponents pencilled in this summer.

It would be a woeful night for the Whites as they went down 3-0 but for one future Wanderer, it was a dream day.

Young forward Tom Eaves netted all three goals to beat Coyle's men and just two weeks later, the Liverpudlian was signed on by the Whites boss for a compensation fee of £200,000.

Wanderers' last meaningful visit to Boundary Park came a decade ago when a solitary Ricardo Vaz Te strike nine minutes in settled an FA Cup fourth round tie.

Their last league visit was back in 1997 when Colin Todd's high-scoring side were held to a goalless draw by the Latics three games from the end of their Division One Championship-winning campaign.

You have to go back even further for Wanderers' last trip to Scunthorpe – a further 10 years to be precise.

The last visit to North Lincolnshire saw Phil Neal's Whites draw 1-1 at the start of another promotion-winning campaign – this time in Division Four.

That game was a year before the Iron opened Glanford Park and this summer will be the first visit for many Wanderers fans who like to chalk up new grounds.

The two teams have met since – in January 2001 when a Dean Holdsworth hat-trick and two goals from Kevin Nolan secured a comfortable 5-1 win at the Macron Stadium in the FA Cup fourth round.

The final away opponents are familiar foes with Wanderers travelling to the Potteries to face Port Vale for the second pre-season running.

Last year Dougie Freedman's team won 2-1 at Vale Park thanks to a Matt Mills goal and a stunning winner from Jermaine Beckford.

Those players are two of the big earners who have just been released by Lennon as he begins his rebuild ahead of his first pre-season.

But he will be hoping for a similar outcome in July as his new-look squad count down to the new campaign.

Alongside the first-team friendlies, Wanderers have also announced a list of away games for a Whites XI which is likely to be a mixture of youth, under-21 and some first-teamers.

They kick off at Atherton Collieries on Saturday, July 4 and finish up at Ramsbottom United on Tuesday, August 4.
