TOM Carson retained his Ian Hesketh Memorial Duathlon title at Rivington.

He completed the first 5k run 56 seconds ahead of his closest rival but was overtaken by Swinton's Mark Russell on the 22k bike ride to go into the final 5k run six seconds behind.

However, Carson mastered the trails around Rivington to turn the deficit into a victory by 11 seconds.

Third place went to Horwich V45, Dave Jackson, with his best triathlon result. The club also had two more members high up the standings of the 85 starters with Paul Massey 10th and Tom Lucas 14th.

On the fells, six Harriers took part in the Helvellyn and The Dodds Fell Race while two opted for the 30th running of the Hutton Roof Fell Race.

Six Harriers all had good runs and finished in rapid succession amongst the 168 finishers at the 15-mile Helvellyn and The Dodds race which included more than 4,000 feet of climbing.

Alastair Murray was the club's leading runner at the Hutton Roof Fell Race near Kendal, completing the seven miles with 1,300 feet of ascent in 60:39 for 23rd place. Colin Waterworth finished 225th in 78:43.

Monday's Austwick Amble Fell Race near Settle saw two Horwich Juniors compete in the u12 boys race with Toby Middleton finishing sixth and Theo Middleton 23rd.

Wednesday's Jubilee Five Mile Road Race included eight members of the organising club competing amongst the 119 runners on a cool dry evening with Jonathan Bruton best placed in five place. Not much further behind was Lindsey Brindle in 13th place overall and taking the ladies' honours by more than two minutes. Rudolf Maciejkowicz continued his V60 winning streak in 37th place overall.

Earlier in the evening 83 young athletes took part in the one mile Street Race along The Street overlooking Upper Rivington Reservoir.

As has become the norm over the past few years with these local junior races, Horwich thoroughly dominated the event with 40 juniors representing the club and 13 finishing in the first 15 with age category wins for Lewis Wilkes (u15), Cain Healy (u11), Thomas Massey (u13), Harrison Stokes (u7), Grace Pendlebury (u9 girls) and Leah Stokes (u7 girls).
