WANDERERS look to be in pole position should they make a summer move for rumoured target Ben Pringle.

The winger is eyeing a stay in the Championship next season after quitting Rotherham United and while there are several clubs monitoring the situation, it is understood Pringle would prefer to stay in his native north of England.

Wanderers are believed to be one of a handful of clubs keen on the wide man with Championship rivals Fulham and Ipswich also reportedly keeping tabs on him.

Recently-relegatedWigan Athletic and Sheffield United from League One are also in the hunt but Pringle would prefer to stay in the second tier as well as in the north – news that gives Wanderers an edge over rivals for his signature.

The 26-year-old turned down a new deal at the New York Stadium last week alongside skipper Craig Morgan – another player believed to be interesting Whites boss Neil Lennon.

A graduate of the famed Wallsend Boys Club in his home town of Newcastle, Pringle spent four years with the Millers but is now available on a free transfer.

The player is yet to decide his future and says while there has been early interest, it may be a waiting game to see what offers are on the table.

Pringle told the Sheffield Star: "There are one or two things that are going on, but, like the majority of players that are in the same position as me, it’s just a waiting game to see what comes along.

"I wouldn’t even think about dropping down unless it was a very good offer or that was my only offer.

"Each player wants to play at the highest level for as long as possible and I’m no different.

"If I’m talking to Championship clubs and one makes me an offer then obviously I am going to be interested."

Meanwhile, outgoing former Whites skipper Matt Mills' potential switch to Nottingham Forest has stalled.

But his ex-Wanderers boss Dougie Freedman remains hopeful a reunion will be rubber-stamped at a meeting with the 28-year-old on Monday.

Mills, who netted seven goals in 94 Whites appearances, was expected to pen a two-year contract at the City Ground this week after passing a medical last weekend but despite also agreeing terms, reports in Nottingham say the deal is not yet done after what sources at the club describe as a "minor hitch".

Fulham also remain keen on Mills' services and are poised to pounce if the Forest deal unexpectedly falls down.

Elsewhere, Liverpool are again being linked with Wanderers stopper Adam Bogdan.

The Hungary international has been offered a new deal at the Macron Stadium but is yet to agree a stay.

And after initially rubbishing interest following the FA Cup meeting between the sides in January, there is renewed interest according to some reports.
