THERE was plenty of controversy in the quarter-finals of the Cross Cup as current holders Bury defeated high-flying rivals Walshaw by just three runs.

Ashen Silva (54) and Mohammed Janghir (52) both scored half-centuries as Bury set their hosts a target of 221 after five runs were added to the total because Walshaw did not complete their last bowling over by an allotted time.

Darren Foy did most of the damage with the ball for Walshaw taking 4-44.

In reply Ally Dickson hit 52 and Danny Hornby struck 30 to set up a tense finale.

However, Walshaw will feel disappointed as Bury also did not meet their deadline of 7.45pm for the start of the final over and they did not get five runs added to their total which could have put them on the verge of victory.

Instead they were all out in pursuit of the win and fell short by three runs.

Matt Smalley (3-47) and Neil Tong (4-55) helped Bury to victory.

Elsewhere, Thusendra de Zoysa fell five runs short of his century as Blackrod progressed to the semi-finals at the expense of Lostock.

Blackrod posted 261-8 with de Zoysa (95) and Zac Burton (83) leading the way with the bat. Tom Sheen took half of the fallen wickets with figures of 4-27.

Nick Bennett (32), Simon Hanson (58) and Tom Hicklin (41) all scored high in the reply – but the bowling attack of Joe Speak (4-22) and Steven Ashworth (4-71) proved too strong and Lostock were bowled out for 177.

Bury will now face Blackrod in the last four.

Seven-time Cross Cup winners Adlington were knocked out by Winton.

Simon Trim scored 65 not out and Carl Drinkwater hit 34 as Adlington posted 186-3. Will Driver was the only bowler of note taking 2-33.

Opening batsmen Richard Johnson (46) and Driver (55) put on an opening stand of 103 in reply as Winton shot out of the blocks.

Brett Cox entered the crease and added 36no to help his side reach the target with nine balls remaining for the loss of only four wickets.

Flixton will meet Winton in the second semi-final after they defeated Darcy Lever by 74 runs.

Substitute pro Bilal Khilji led Flixton to victory scoring a superb 136 with the bat. Ashley Perry (52) and Shay Parkinson (36no) also scored high to rack up a total of 284-3.

Ather Abid hit 79 but the overs expired as his side were poised on 210-6 – with half of the wickets falling at the hands of Aiden Fetherston (3-42).

The semi-finals are due to be played on July 12.
