THE Bolton Cosmopolitan Cricket League is looking to attract clubs to play in its midweek 20-over league.

The league has been established in the town since 1958 but remains little known in the town.

It was one of the first leagues in the country to play Twenty20 cricket, although that was more due to time issues than being ahead of their time.

It has six clubs at the moment and plays on Wednesday and Thursday nights.

They play all matches on the grounds of established local clubs Bolton Indians, Deane and Derby, Kearsley and Little Lever.

They would ideally want eight clubs and are willing to accept any teams who are able to field a regular side.

They also believe they could offer established Bolton clubs' junior sides regular midweek cricket.

Treasurer Harry Brown said: "We've been going for more than 50 years and at our peak we had 12 to 14 clubs.

"It's been eight for a while and we've gone down to seven and back up to eight. This is the first time we've been down to six but we're not worried about going any lower because the six clubs are all stalwarts and very keen.

"We would like to get up to eight because that's the ideal number for the number of weeks we play between mid-April and mid-August.

"We would never turn any teams away and if we got 16 we'd have two divisions of eight.

"We'll take any teams including local clubs' junior teams from under-15s to under-18s who maybe aren't getting a game at the moment because other teams can't raise a team."
