CALLUM McPhillips has won the BGA Boys Championship Trophy for the second time in two years.

The Turton Golf Club player scored an exceptional 70 gross which gave him a five-shot winning margin ahead of his nearest challenger Marcus Scholes of Old Links.

Scratch handicapper McPhillips, who is 18 and in his last year as a junior, is well known in Lancashire junior circles, and was part of a six-strong team that took part in the England Boys' qualifiers at Seascale last week.

Scholes, who has made significant strides in recent years, took second place with a 75 gross ahead of Henry Schofield’s 76.

Another Turton member, Callum Heyes-Smith, was fourth with 77 on a card play-off from Jacob Reece of Horwich who recorded the same score.

The BGA produced another exciting competition for all junior beginners.

Played over nine holes using the forward blue tees, the competition featured around 20 youngsters.

The youngest was seven-year-old Andrew Small of Dunscar who slashed his 54 handicap by returning a 31 nett.

BGA president, Glynn Evans said: “It was a late idea to offer a competition to give youngsters a start in competitive golf.

"We settled for those boys and girls who held a current handicap of between 30 and 54 and used the short course to compete.

"It was a resounding success with the clubhouse full of parents to watch the prize-giving.”

Dan Grundy (Dunscar) won the first prize with a 23 nett followed by club-mate Allie Cowan who also score 23 nett.

Third was Mitchell Looker of Breightmet (25), fourth Tom Duddle of Chorley (26), fifth Taylor Yates of Hart Common (28) and sixth Ethan Swinton of Dunscar (28).
