RON and Sylvia Gorton won the BGA Corser Trophy at Old Links.

The husband and wife pairing beat 59 other male and female pairings with an excellent 64.6 nett score.

Seventeen couples were under the course par of 72 on the day in the annual competition.

They each came away with a trophy and a prize of £220 between them.

Sylvia Gorton said: “It was a wonderful day for us. We played reasonably well I thought and made a good combination and we were so proud to receive our trophies.”

Runners-up were Steve Gallagher and Shirley Holland, both members of Turton Golf Club, where Gallagher is the club captain and Holland is the lady captain.

They took the prize of £60 each following their 65.4 nett, just 0.2 behind the leaders.

The best gross prize went to Karl Bowker of Old Links together with club-mate Maria Miller who is president-elect for the Lancashire Ladies Seniors 2016. They produced a magnificent gross score of 73 and went home with a prize of £50 each.

Leslie McKnight and wife Margaret (Old Links) scored a 67.0 nett for third place while Breightmet’s pairing of Michael Fenton and Linda Woods came fourth with a 67.6.

Other scores were: Graham Frees and Mary Trowbridge (Regent Park) 68.2, Ian Hassall and Jane Sayner (Old Links) 68.4, and Jeff and Hilary Hibbert (Turton) 68.6.
