BOLTON PARKRUN: Report and results from Saturday's event

The rain appeared to take the 'three-two-one go' call to start the run as an invitation to begin pouring down.

A puddle-ridden course may also have had some bearing on the reduced numbers who turned out to complete the 241st parkrun to be held in Bolton.

They were not enough to put off the 173 runners who did brave the conditions and splashed through the 5k course which starts and finishes on the Bolton Harriers track and takes runners around surrounding woodland, trails and paths.

Somehow eight runners managed to record personal bests and 16 people chose Saturday to run their first parkrun at Bolton.

Still on the numbers, 16 different athletics clubs were represented and 15 volunteers stepped forward to ensure the event could take place.

These people really are the lifeblood of parkrun and if anyone is able to give up an hour or so on a Saturday morning to help, just send the organisers an email and they will get back to you.

Unknown runners were first and third to cross the line this week (that's someone who has not downloaded or brought along their barcode), either side of Gary Furness (SM25-29, unattached) who crossed the line in 19mins 41secs.

First lady was Paula Pilling (VW40-44, Burnden Road Runners) and 11th overall in 21:52, the 19th time in 49 appearances she has been first lady.

Next was Vicki Hamer (SW25-29, Burnden Road Runners) who was 39th overall in 24:23, and third was Rachel Hancock (VW40-44, unattached in 25:06).

The best age grade scores belonged to Kath Vickers (VW55-59) with 70.50 per cent for her time of 26:23 (56th overall). Pilling was second with 69.97 per cent and Finlay Coyne (VM65-69) was graded 69.73 per cent for his time of 24:17 which was good enough for an overall 38th place.

Since Bolton parkrun started on February 5, 2011, 5,510 different runners, including members of 250 athletics clubs, have completed 46,415 runs covering a total distance of 232,075 km, and there have been 8,850 new personal bests.

This week's runners of the week were Wendy Doxey and Sara Das who completed their 50th runs.
