EAGLEY produced one of the performances of the day in securing three points on a wet Saturday afternoon after beating the West Lancashire League Premier Division league leaders Fulwood Amateurs with a convincing 6–2 win.

Ground staff Karl Hurst and Reg Wharton worked tirelessly to get the game on and when the referee inspected the Dunscar pitch he said it was one of the best he’d seen at this time of year, and probably one of the only games able to be played in the area.

From the off the Eagles probably gave their best performance of the season, winning every ball and closing down any Fulwood threat.

After a couple of missed chances the ball fell to Eagley forward Joe O' Keefe who went on a mazy run in the box before being fouled.

Up stepped leading scorer Heath Ainscow who made no mistake from the penalty spot to give Eagley the lead . The home side continued to press, and just before half time Joe O’Keefe found himself with just the keeper to beat, and slotted the ball home for 2-0.

After the break, Fulwood came out fighting and within minutes were awarded a free kick.

The set-piece was well executed beating the Eagles keeper Tom MacDonald to make it 2-1 and the leaders were back in the game.

But Eagley were not ready to give up their lead and soon won a free kick on the edge of the area.

Player-manager Simon Whaley led by example and curled a cracker into the top right corner, giving the Fulwood shot stopper no chance, for 3-1.

This spurred on the Eagles to keep pressing and soon Ainscow was at it again as a shot rolled over the line for 4-1. He blasted another one home for his hat-trick and 5-1. Then it was O’Keefe’s turn again as he went past two defenders and slotted it in from a tight angle 6-1.

Fulwood kept pressing and in the final minutes managed to make it 6-2, but only a consolation from a terrific Eagley performance.

After the game, manager Whaley admitted it was the best Eagley performance so far.

He said: “All of the lads were superb, and they scored some great goals.

“We go to Charnock and score five goals and now put six past Fulwood.

"They just need to believe how good they are and be consistent with it and we will begin to pick up the points.”

The result moved the Eagles up to 11th in the division with most other games postponed.

Elsewhere, in Division One, Ladybridge had to settle for a share of the spoils after a 1-1 draw at Askam United.

Jordan Coop put Ladybridge ahead but Callum Raynor ensured the hosts picked up a point.

Meanwhile, the weather affected the fixture list with matches called off in Division Two but Stoneclough wrapped up a high-scoring win beating Walney Island convincingly 6-1.

Joe McCann was the hero with two goals in each half while Cameron Peeling and Saul Rostron scored.

Peter Conroy, secretary of Stoneclough, said: “Our pitch is higher than the surrounding area so there was a good chance of it being on.

“It was fine and the spectators told us the conditions were okay.

“I think Walney Island were hoping for it to be called off but we wanted the game on because we have a tough game against CMB next week so we could have done with the practice.

“We played them off the park and Joe McCann was great.

“We are hoping for promotion this year and if CMB keep beating the teams around us then we can hold on for second place.”
