JOHN McGinlay scored a hat-trick as Wanderers flattened Tottenham 6-1 in the Coca Cola Cup on this week in 1996.

Having beaten Bristol City and Chelsea in the previous rounds, Colin Todd’s side replicated their outstanding form in the league to lay waste to Gerry Francis’s top flight boys.

McGinlay opened the scoring after just six minutes and then grabbed another just before half time. He then completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot with 20 minutes to go.

Gerry Taggart got in on the scoring act before Scott Taylor and Nathan Blake completed the rout, booking a place in the fifth round against Wimbledon.

Unfortunately on that occasion they were beaten 2-0 with goals from Efan Ekoku and Oyvind Leonhardsen.

Teddy Sheringham grabbed the consolation for Gerry Francis’s side, who also had future Wanderers keeper Ian Walker in goal.

In 1990 Wanderers’ marathon League Cup tie against Swindon Town was finally settled – seven-and-a-half hours after it started.

It took four games to separate the two sides, who had draw 3-3, 1-1 and 1-1 before the Robins finally lost in extra time at the County Ground.

Mark Came had equalised for Wanderers after Shaun White had opened the scoring on the hour. The game looked to be heading for a fourth replay when Ross McClaren popped up with a winner three minutes from full time.

In 1995 Wanderers hit the internet with the launch of their first-ever club website.
