C SECTION leaders Westhoughton C were stretched to the limit before finally overcoming Forrest E in the Bolton Badminton League.

Going into the game with a perfect record of 10 wins from 10 games, they had to wait until the last of the men’s games to claim a 10-8 victory and prevent their opponents, Forrest E , from a draw.

Fourth-placed Forrest got off to a flying start, claiming the first four mixed games.

Their second couple, Linda Rigby and Jack Hamer, won the opening games 21-12, 21-19, against Becky Grime and John Cole, and team-mates Louise Quayle and James Wallen – Forrest’s first couple – beat Linda Redford and Peter Nicholson 21-15, 21-18.

Westhoughton’s Maggie Cairns and Anthony Hughes got their team back into the game when they won the match between the third couples comfortably, 21-14, 21-9 against Lyndsey Tait and David Travis.

When the first couples met the games were shared, Westhoughton’s Grime and Cole winning the first 21-19 and Quayle and Wallen taking the second 21-5.

The second couples also shared their games, Forrest’s Rigby and Hamer holding their nerve to take the first 22-20 before Redford and Nicholson won the second 21-17.

Going into the level doubles Forrest were 6-4 ahead, but Westhoughton’s determined ladies, Cairns and Grime, pulled their team level with 21-11, 21-16 wins against Tait and Quayle.

The first pair of men’s games were shared when Westhoughton’s Hughes and Cole won the first 21-19 and Travis and Wallen the second 21-12.

Westhougton went in front for the first time in the match when the second pair of ladies’ games comfortably went their way to see them take a 9-7 lead.

The margin was reduced to one game when Forrest’s Travis and Hamer won the first of the final pair of men's games 21-8 before Westhoughton was the second to win the match and extend their unbeaten run.
