BOLTON Metro swimmers enjoyed fantastic success at the North West Regional Winter Championships held in Liverpool.

There were a large number of qualifiers from Metro at this prestigious event and the squad performed fantastically and finished 10th out of 32 clubs competing including the City squads from Manchester and Liverpool, who were on home ground.

Metro’s highlight from the event was in the women’s 50m freestyle as Bolton swimmers Anna Doughty and Emily Barclay swept the board with Anna winning the 16 and under category and Emily the 17 and over.

Both swimmers also recorded National Championship qualifying times. Anna also went on to win Silver in the 200 Individual Medley, whereas Emily also claimed two silver medals in the 100 and 200m freestyle, and a fourth place in 50m Backstroke.

James Morrison and James Oxborrow won medals in the men’s events with James Morrison winning silver in the 16 and under 200m butterfly and James Oxborrow, bronze in the 17 and over 50m backstroke. James Oxborrow also finished fourth in 40m freestyle and fifth in 100m freestyle.

Metro were also represented in a number of finals with Jack Dandy finishing fourth in 17 and over 50m butterfly pipping Jo Akik who finished fifth in the same event.

Arran Bostock was fifth in the 100m backstroke. Sam Atkinson also qualified for the 200m freestyle final.

Head Coach Mike Robinson was extremely pleased with the weekend’s performances by all swimmers but especially Emily Barclay.

He said: "Emily has struggled through injury problems over the last couple of years and it’s great to watch her start to regain her fitness and fulfil her potential”.
