THIS week I would like to concentrate on our plans for girls' football.

The BBDFL previously provided girls' football and it worked for a period of time, but we didn't have the volunteers in the early age groups to continue to keep that momentum going and it tailed off.

This was a fault of the league as we did not give the girls' game the attention it deserves.

We are determined to put that right and build a structure to mirror the main grassroots programme.

As most coaches are aware, girls can play in the same teams as the boys up to 15 years of age and this works for some girls.

But it does not work for all of them and some girls want to play in all-girls' teams, in all-girls' leagues so they can develop in an environment suited to their needs.

As such, for 2016-17 we are looking to start under-sevens and u8s dedicated girls' football leagues to cater for those girls and teams.

As always, we do not do things by half and also want to put on a number of events up to Christmas 2016 and then give the girls a break until March 2017.

In March 2017 we are seeking to commence the full girls' football league which will mirror the Women's Super League – which itself is a summer competition and runs from March until October.

We, though, would look to break during the summer holidays at the end of July and throughout August.

This would then be the first league of its type in the country which is providing u7s and u8s girls' football during a period when the weather is better and the pitches are more in keeping with development instead of a mud bath or worse.

In year one, we are looking to offer dedicated girls teams FREE entry into this league

Each subsequent year we would seek to add an age group to the programme, moving up through u9s, u10s and upwards using the same model which has made the BBDFL such a success.
