KEARSLEY'S unbeaten Bolton League champions of 1979 will be back together again next Saturday.

The team will be back on their old stomping ground to watch their old club's league match against Farnworth at Springfield Road.

The reunion was organised after their Australian pro that year, Chris Perrott, contacted former Kearsley team manager/secretary Colin Davies to say he was coming over from Down Under for a visit and would like to see his former team-mates.

Davies and current secretary Neil Hamblett then set about getting in touch with the old players, all of whom accepted the invitation to attend next week's game apart from Peter O'Brien whom they have been unable to contact.

The team is the only one ever to go through an entire season undefeated in the 86-year history of the Bolton League.

It happened six years into a golden era which saw them win the League seven times in 20 years.

Davies, whose 20-year spell as manager/secretary coincided exactly with those glorious two decades, said: "Chris Perrott got in touch to say he was coming over from Australia. He said he really enjoyed the two years he had at Kearsley and he asked me if the lads were still around because he would like to see them.

"Me and Neil Hamblett got in touch with them and they are all going to turn up apart from Peter O'Brien who we have not been able to contact."

Looking back at that historic season in 1979, he said: "It was an amazing thing to go through the season unbeaten, the only team ever to do so in the Bolton League.

"We should have lost the last game at home to Heaton to be honest but we got lucky. They ripped us apart and we ended up with a draw after Fred Elmore, the stalwart umpire at the time, brought us off for bad light.

"That year the second team were champions as well and we have contacted some of them and they are coming so we should have 15 or 16 players from that year coming along on the day.

If anyone knows the whereabouts of Peter O'Brien or has any information about him they can contact Colin Davies on 01204 792868.
