THE top performances of the week came from Horwich’s junior racers.

In the Jubilee Street one-miler, Cian Healy was first in 5mins 29secs and Isaac Battye second, 32 seconds behind, in a field of 53 runners including 30 from the Harriers for race one.

Freya Whittle was the first girl home in third place and Harrison Stokes was first M8 in 12th.

There were other category wins in the race for Horwich’s Ryan McCaffery (M7), Emma Bradley (F8), Sophie McCaffery (F5) and Jacob Walton (M4).

In race two Lewis Wilkes (M14) edged out Thomas Massey (M12) for a one-two for RMI.

Ella Pendlebury had a fine week in the English Junior Fell Championship, finishing third in the Turner Hall fell race and fourth in the Clougha Pike fell race. The following day at the Youth Development League track meeting in Macclesfield she won the 1200m. Lydia Johnson also featured well at both meetings and Toby Middleton came sixth at Clougha Pike. The results mean Horwich are 14th of 48 clubs in the English Junior Fell Club Championship with one more leg to go, at Church Stretton.

Two Horwich juniors, Thomas Grundy and Lewis Wilkes, gained their county vests for Greater Manchester and put in sound performances at the English Schools event in Birmingham.

Ex-RMI junior Rob Hope had a brilliant World Mountain Racing Championship result on Sunday when he finished 16th in a field

of 74 world-class runners.

Only just emerging from the junior category, Luke Massey took second place in the Jubilee road race on Wednesday and then won the Horwich 5k as part of the Festival of Racing on Sunday.

Nick Leigh won the Pigeon Tower fell race, also as part of the festival, on Friday and then won Horwich-based Mad Bull’s Race the Train event on Sunday in which Paul Muller and Tony Hesketh both won their age categories.

This was despite Muller taking a wrong turn and Hesketh suffering a fall during the race.

Other performances of the week from the vets included Graham Schofield’s fine seventh in the Brown Wardle fell race, taking the V60 prize, Peter Scott’s V70 prize at the Jubilee race and Mary White (V65) winning first lady at the three-day Tour of Horwich, taking in trail, road and fell races.

Michael Crook continued a great run of parkrun results as a V65 at Pennington Flash and was only three seconds off a personal best this week.
