CALLUM Grant will be hoping to work his magic in his Merlyn yet again as he lines up at Oulton Park this weekend.

The 21-year-old Bromley Cross racer earned two podium finishes in his last outing.

He finished third in both Formula Ford races in the Silverstone Classic meeting last month and will be hoping to climb his way to the top of the podium in the Oulton Park Gold Cup.

Grant qualified fifth on the grid at Silverstone, where he rode Jon Sykes' Merlyn MK5/7 in the Commander Yorke Trophy for Historic Formula Juniors.

His best lap time of 2mins 23secs around the 3.63 mile circuit put him near the top of the 61-strong field, but Grant was hampered by mechanical problems.

Thankfully, he had a clear run over the weekend.

Grant had a great start in the first race and was soon challenging the four drivers ahead – Andrew Hibberd, Sam Wilson, Westie Mitchell and Cameron Jackson.

The front two of Hibberd and Wilson proved to be in a different class, pulling away from the field, but Grant was able to use his racing skills to good effect to make up two places by the finish.

Grant showed great race pace in the second race of the weekend, but his bid of challenging for the top two places was hampered by back markers and slow traffic.

The race was won by Wilson with Hibbard close behind in second place, while Grant once again occupied the third step on the podium, coming home 16 seconds adrift of the leading duo.

He will be competing in the Merlyn again in the Formula Ford at the Oulton Park Gold Cup, which takes place over three days this bank holiday weekend, starting on Saturday.
