WANDERERS go into the final day of the transfer window looking to sign up to three new players.

Phil Parkinson has found his recruitment plans thrown up in the air in the last few days after loaning big-earning Ben Amos to Cardiff City and then seeing Mark Davies ruled out for the rest of the season with a cruciate knee ligament damage.

Two Premier League loan deals – a defender and a striker – had previously been lined-up before tonight's 11pm deadline but all bets now appear to be off.

Despite Davies’s injury the Football League are not expected to give any extra leeway to Wanderers to bring in players above the squad limit set by their embargo, which is understood to be 23 professionals, regardless of their wage.

If Parkinson is successful and manages to bring in the three players he feels can balance his squad, it will means three players could be departing the Macron permanently or on loan before the window closes.

Wanderers were last night in talks with a handful of potential signings, one of which is Arsenal midfielder Gedion Zelalem.

The German-born US citizen spent last season on loan with Rangers and is a player in a similar mould to Davies.

The Whites continue to play down their interest in ex-Motherwell utility man Tom Hateley despite sources in Poland claiming he is close to agreeing a deal at the Macron.

Son of ex-QPR and England striker Mark and grandson of former Liverpool striker Tony, Hateley can play at right-back or in midfield and is available on a free after leaving Polish club Slask Wroclaw.

The 26-year-old has been in talks with Scottish club Dundee but also has Partick Thistle and Hibernian – managed by ex-Wanderers boss Neil Lennon – on his trail.

Wanderers, who top the League One table by two points after five games, have maintained in recent weeks they do not have to sell in-form stars such as Jay Spearing and Josh Vela despite heavy interest from elsewhere.

Writing in his programme notes for last night’s Checkatrade Trophy clash against Everton’s Under-23s, chairman Ken Anderson expected a busy final 24 hours of the window.

“Although we are still working within the constraints of the embargo, we are pleased with our recruitment so far and still hopeful of bringing in more faces before the transfer window closes,” he wrote.
