PHIL Parkinson insists he made the right call by allowing Kaiyne Woolery to join Wigan Athletic on transfer deadline day.

After allowing the pacy striker to join the Latics in a £200,000 deal the Whites boss revealed he had already been planning to loan him out until Gary Caldwell upped his offer.

It is understood the extra cash allowed Parkinson to land both Sammy Ameobi and James Henry on loan deals – with hopes high both players will extend their stays until the end of the season in January.

“It was a tough decision,” he told The Bolton News. “The way I looked at it was that if we’d told our supporters at the start of the window that we had to let Kaiyne go but we’d be able to keep Zach Clough, they’d all have been delighted.

“We needed to change it around and got an offer which doubled almost overnight. We thought in the situation we were in that we could utilise the space he created and the money it raised.

“Decisions like that are always tight. We were thinking about loaning him out but that option didn’t materialise during the day. The decision was taken in the best interests of everyone going forward and we wish him all the best.”

Wanderers also allowed home-grown midfielder Tom Walker to join Bury on loan and Conor Wilkinson to link up with Chesterfield.

“Tom, for me, needs to go and make his way in the world,” explained Parkinson. “He has been here a long time.

“He has a lot of potential but I feel he has to go and roll his sleeves up now and show what he can do. He has been a bit of a victim of being a squad player for quite a while and you can stagnate if that happens.

“We think he needs to go and play.

“Conor has done well and made a contribution recently but with Gary Madine and Jamie Proctor, two target-men types, and Sammy Ameobi coming in who can also play either side as well as through the middle, it made sense.”

Parkinson confirmed another deal – which would potentially have been the sixth on deadline day – fell short at 9.30pm on Wednesday evening.

Wanderers take on Southend United today with the Whites boss hoping to use the mood of optimism at the Macron to his advantage.

“It is a happy place at the moment and we hope that can continue,” he said.
