Bolton Wanderers wait to see if Marcos Alonso's £23million move to Chelsea means a cash windfall

The former Real Madrid left-back was a surprise deadline day capture at Stamford Bridge, where he became Antonio Conte’s fourth signing of the summer.

His big move came just three years after he turned down the chance of an extended deal at Bolton to join Italian outfit Fiorentina.

Rumours of a sell-on clause were played down instantly by the club last week but they could now benefit from a new FIFA directive which rewards clubs who contributed to a player’s development before the age of 23 when they make an international transfer.

Alonso was signed by Owen Coyle for just £1.5million as a 19-year-old from Real – where he had been in the system from the age of 12. He spent three years with the Whites before moving to Italy.

Reports in Spain claim Real could be granted £675,000, presuming the headline figure of £23m is confirmed as correct. That would mean Wanderers are due a solidarity payment of around £300,000.

Much will now depend on how Alonso’s move to Chelsea has been structured, with the Whites currently unable to estimate the size of speed of the payment they will receive until paperwork has been checked.

Alonso played 46 times for Wanderers in three seasons at Bolton, featuring prominently in his final year under Dougie Freedman. After moving to Serie A he returned briefly to play for Sunderland in the Premier League in 2014, making 20 appearances on Wearside before heading back to Fiorentina.

Meanwhile, Phil Parkinson and Jay Spearing have been nominated for the Sky Bet Manager and Player of the Month for August in League One.

Wanderers top the table after relegation last season, with stand-in skipper Spearing playing a major part in their revival, scoring twice.

Parkinson is joined by Scunthorpe boss Graham Alexander, Gillingham’s Justin Edinburgh and Bradford’s Stuart McCall. Spearing is nominated alongside Millwall’s Steve Morison, Scunthorpe’s Josh Morris and Port Vale’s Nathan Smith.
