HORWICH may have won the first and last 40-over cup competition on Sunday.
The Railwaymen overcame Farnworth in the final at Heaton to lift the trophy which was introduced this season.
But a lukewarm response to the competition from many clubs could lead to it being ditched.
Its future will be discussed at the next monthly meeting of the League and it is not expected to continue in its current format.
The League has had a reasonably competitive season as one division of 21 teams since being joined by nine former Bolton Association clubs.
It is expected next season will be far more closely fought and competitive when it splits into two divisions of 10 – Standish having decided to leave to join the Palace Shield.
The League’s new Twenty20 format has been a big success and plans are being made to increase the number of games in that competition.
But the 40-over competition has not been as well received.
Horwich won it by posting 189 of which Brett Pelser scored around 60 before Farnworth fell well short of the target, captain Simon Booth running out of partners on a top score of around 30.
