BOLTON Wyresdale came out on top in their local derby at home to Castle Hill, hitting six goals to chalk up their second league win of the season.

A typically feisty clash saw Wyresdale's youthful side come out on top with Sam Cooper scoring twice. The hosts' margin of victory could have been greater but for a missed penalty late in the day.

Ewan McCulloch opened the scoring for Wyresdale and Milo Horrocks doubled the advantage. Cooper netted the first of his two goals before Castle Hill gave themselves a lifeline, pulling the score back to 3-1 shortly before the break.

Their hopes were dashed with less than a minute of the second half played, however. Alex Buchanan, brought on as a substitute during the interval, made it 4-1 with his first touch, just 45 seconds after the restart.

And when Wyresdale scored goal of the game minutes later, with excellent team play ending with Horrocks' cross being neatly turned in by Curt Harbord, the game was up for Castle Hill.

However, the visitors refused to buckle and responded with a goal to bring it back to 5-2.

Cooper scored number six for Wyresdale, who were again pegged back but were handed the chance to seal victory in style with a late penalty, but McCulloch failed to convert from 12 yards.

That late blip aside, Wyresdale's manager, Aamar Ahmed, was pleased with a job well done by his team.

"It was a good game, a bit feisty on both sides but the players did alright in keeping a lid on it," he said. "We've got a young side, I think we only have two players over the age of 22, and Castle Hill are very strong.

"They had a few chances, as shown by Adam Ahmed, our centre-half, being named man-of-the-match. He put in a lot of blocks and worked really hard against their forwards.

"Adam and the defence played really well against three very good forwards that did cause us problems."

Wyresdale are on the road this weekend as they travel to Hesketh Casuals, who sit second from bottom in the Division One table, having won one and lost 10 matches.

The Premier Division's big winners at the weekend were Horwich St Mary's Victoria, who returned from Howe Bridge Mills after a convincing 7-0 victory that put them joint top of the league.

Howe Bridge defended well throughout the first half but after missing a couple of half chances Horwich took the lead on the half-hour mark when

Jonathon Shacklady's flick set up Aaron Thorpe to smash the ball into the roof of the net.

Two minutes into the second half Horwich's second goal came, Jay Mannion lobbing the keeper after a good ball from Jordan Coop.

Goal number three came soon after, captain Danny Mills taking responsibility to score from the penalty spot, and Ross Ellison grabbed the fourth on 60 minutes, firing home from eight yards.

Mannion smashed home his second of the game when he was sent clear and he completed his hat-trick 10 minutes from time with another good finish.

Ellison completed the rout with his second of the game, finding the finish after a scramble in the Howe bridge box.

"We weren't at our best in the first half but it was a much improved second-half performance in which we scored six good goals," said joint manager Dave Walker.

"We just need to keep our momentum going and now our focus turns to Whitworth Valley away next week."

Elsewhere in the top flight Old Boltonians were 4-1 winners at home to Whitworth, with David Warburton (two), Lee Worswick and Darren Dalton scoring, while Little Lever stay in fourth – two points ahead of Bolts but having played a game more – after their 2-2 draw at Old Blackburnians.
