SHEFFIELD United have been forced into a defensive reshuffle for tomorrow’s FA Cup clash with Wanderers – but Chris Basham could come to the rescue.

Wolves have denied Ethan Ebanks-Landell the opportunity to face the Whites at the Macron but Chris Wilder looks set to keep faith with Basham, the former Bolton trainee, in a new-look back four.

A former McDonalds employee before he was picked up from college by the Wanderers scouts, Basham has let no-one down in the Blades defence of late.

But he revealed it was only the faith of Alan Cork, the former Bolton reserve team boss, which convinced him he could switch positions as a youngster.

“Alan was the first person who put me there,” Basham said. “It goes back to my days as a reserve at Bolton when he was a coach there and, despite being a midfielder, I’ve always felt pretty comfortable in that position.

“Everybody else used to say I needed broader shoulders to play at the back. But I always knew I could do it and, to be fair, Alan did too.”

With James Wilson also missing, Chris Wilder is happy to have the versatile Basham in his ranks.

And having previously stated the Wearsider would only play there “in an emergency” the form of John Fleck and Paul Coutts in the middle of the park has forced Basham to push for a place elsewhere in the side.

“Flecky and Couttsy have been doing really well in the middle,” Basham said. “They’ve dominated opponents in there but I can dominate in a different way and the gaffer knows he’ll always get a shift out of me no matter where I play.”
