BOLTON Old Links juniors made up for the disappointment of losing in the final of the Manchester and District Golf Alliance’s Junior Challenge Trophy last year by winning this year's competition.

They beat Davyhulme Park Golf Club 4&3 at Lowes Park Golf Club after winning through four rounds to reach the final of the knockout competition.

Davyhulme Park had also had an outstanding run of victories to reach the last two of the singles matchplay competition for juniors with a maximum handicap of 18.

The final promised much from two teams who had impressed in the competition, and it did not disappoint as the battle for one of the area’s top team trophies, sponsored by Williams BMW, was intense.

Max Powter was in action first for Old Links and narrowly lost 3&2.

But the juniors from Bolton were in front after the next two games, Nathan Clarke winning 3&2 and Jamie Welsby 4&3 to put their team 2-1 ahead.

The lead was short-lived with Jack Bryan losing his game 3&1.

Like Powter before him, Bryan came back from a difficult start to take his game to the final hole.

Again Old Links went back in front, Oliver Chadwick showing nerves of steel to restore the lead. On a gripping final hole he was one up and had two puts to win.

Thinking he needed to hole the first he his shot raced past the hole leaving him with a tricky five-footer coming back.

But he remained calm under pressure and sank it.

Junior captain Ryan Hamer then secured the trophy with a 4&3 victory before Sam Rigby came from two down on the 15th to narrowly lose the last match on the 18th.
