WANDERERS Under-18s’ unbeaten three-match run was ended by Sheffield Wednesday this afternoon.
The Owls won 3-1 at the Eddie Davies Academy in a rearranged U18 Professional Development League clash.
Nicky Spooner’s young Whites started brightly but it was Wednesday who broke the deadlock when a defence-splitting pass led top Wanderers conceding a penalty which Jake Turner saved, only for the rebound to beat the teenage England stopper.
It was 2-0 to the South Yorkshire side before half time but after the interval, in-form Alex Samizadeh halved the deficit.
Wanderers pressed for the equaliser but were caught on the break late on as Wednesday secured all three points.
A disappointed Spooner told The Bolton News: “We started the game well looking to play out from the back and exploit Sheffield in wide areas.
“In the second half we had the strong wind and put Sheffield under pressure but they broke just before the end to take the points.”
