AFTER playing his part in halting the club’s reverse last season, Andy Taylor is looking for Wanderers to work through the gears in the Championship next season.

The full-back says successfully moving from the third tier to the second involves bridging a massive gap in quality and they will be lining up against genuinely talented teams week in, week out.

All but five teams in the division next season have had Premier League experience but that will not stop Taylor and his team-mates from dreaming of reaching the pinnacle of the English game themselves.

“Personally, I think it is a big gap. There are a few decent teams at League One level but generally speaking the football is physical, it’s direct and you’ve got to get on with it,” he said. “Next season the step up in quality you’re up against is massive.

“Ninety per cent of the teams you play in the Championship have either been in the Premier League or looking to get up there.

“More and more players from the Premier League are dropping into the division because there is good money.

“Last season was fantastic and we’ll all be looking to kick on. Everyone knows there is a big challenge ahead but I think you’ve got to dream big. Why not?”

“We’ve come off the back of a fantastic season, everyone has got behind us, so why can’t we go and have another successful season?”

Taylor, aged 30, who began his career alongside David Wheater at Middlesbrough, won promotion to the top flight with Cardiff City in 2013. He moved to the Macron on a season-long loan from Wigan Athletic in August and last week signed a two-year contract to stay at the club. While he did not witness first-hand the previous campaign’s woes Taylor feels the backwards step of relegation actually allowed the club to move into forward gear.

“Hopefully the club has taken a step back to take a few forward,” he added. “You can sense there is a spirit right around the place at the moment, from the management and the players to whatever level, all the staff, and you have to use that.

“It hasn’t been an easy time for the club but you look at where things are now and I think it looks quite positive.”
