SHARPLES wrestler Georgina Nelthorpe came back home from her first-ever senior global tournament with a medal after putting in an impressive display at the Sassari International in Sardinia.
The 20-year-old, who is technically still a junior in wrestling terms, won bronze in the women’s 75kg division, while Sharples Wrestling Club team-mate George Ramm was fourth in the men’s 61kg class.
Coach Eddy Kavanagh was delighted with the performances put in by his own wrestlers as part of a four-member England team, which he led at the tournament.
“George did really well in what was a really tough weight class, but for Georgina to win a medal in her first senior international was something else,” he said.
“She was delighted to get a couple of wins under her belt and learned a lot from the experience.
“Georgina won her first two matches, beating Italian wrestlers Eleni Pjollaj and Enrica Rinaldi both by a pin
“She went on to lose her next two matches against tough wrestlers from Romania and Kazakhstan, but she will have taken a lot from that experience.
"To get two wins in her first international senior tournament has helped her gain more confidence as she makes the transition from a junior to a senior competitor.
"Georgina is now looking forward to her next International Senior Tournament in Romania on July 22-23."
