GARY Madine hopes he can put to bed one of the worst moments in his Wanderers career at Sheffield United tomorrow.

The striker sat out a 2-0 defeat at Sheffield United in February after a video circulated in the build-up which showed him insulting Blades striker Billy Sharp.

Sharp scored twice at Bramall Lane as Chris Wilder’s side extended their lead at the top of League One, en route to the title.

Madine’s absence was put down to illness but the former Sheffield Wednesday man was only pulled from the squad an hour before kick-off.

Now he is looking to exorcise some demons as Phil Parkinson’s side try and bounce back from the Boxing Day defeat at Middlesbrough.

“I can’t wait,” Madine told The Bolton News.

“I was devastated last year, in the back of a taxi full of a cold, and the taxi driver had it on the radio. All I could hear was ‘Billy Sharp one, Billy Sharp two,’ it was a nightmare.

“Hopefully I’ll stay illness-free this time and listening to boos. It’ll cheer me on inside.

“I hope I get stick. If they are booing me I must be doing something right. I have been there and upset them before and I want to do it again.”

Madine has been among Wanderers’ most consistent performers this season and has now registered his best goal return in the Championship with seven.

He puts his improvement down to the medical staff at Lostock.

“Nick Allamby has done a great job, I don’t think I have ever played 23 games in a row in my whole life. I’m very grateful,” he said.

“It’s the same with the rest of the lads, they’re fit.

“Sammy Ameobi was still chasing the ball after 95 minutes against Cardiff and I don’t think he’s ever done that as well.

“I look back to when I was 20-21 and I’d just signed for Sheffield Wednesday and David Hirst pulled me aside and told me to just keep sprinting.

“He said if I chased the keeper down, 19 times out of 20 I’ll get nothing out of it but sooner or later a defender will switch off and not see me coming back onside and something will drop.

“They say you make your own luck and that’s what I’m trying to do.”
