BOLTON School under-15s’ cricket team got a little expert advice and coaching ahead of a massvie game in the English Schools’ Cricket Association (ESCA) competition tomorrow.
The team take on Sale Grammar School in the northern quarter-final at Brooklands Cricket Club.
Bolton School has never gone far in the prestigious national tournament which pits the county champions at under-14s the previous year against each other.
Bolton School became ESCA U14s’ Lancashire champions last year to quality for this year’s national tournament, and if they win tomorrow they will go on to face either Newcastle School for Boys – representing Northumberland – or Durham’s represtatives, Hetton School, away in the Northern semi-final.
The team will go into the game having benefited from the coaching and wise words of three former Lancashire players in the lead-up to the big day.
Warren Hegg, John Abrahams and Sajid Mahmood attended an indoor nets session where they ran the rule over the players alongside the Chorley New Road school’s team manager Nigel Partingon, a legend in the Bolton Cricket League in which he still turns out for Tonge.
Wicketkeeper Hegg, who also played for England, gave a masterclass in the discipline and was impressed by what he saw of the team.
“I really enjoyed that session,” he said afterwards.
“There was plenty of talent on show and I will look out for the boys’ results this season with interest.”
