IT seems CMB do not know the meaning of the word quit.

They still have a lot of ground to make up on Division One’s top two and are facing a gruelling schedule to cram in their games in hand.

But Rob Pennington’s side have got into the habit of winning and refuse to give up on sneaking into the promotion places this season.

League defeats to Poulton and Hurst Green, either side of a Lancashire FA Shield exit to Fulwood made for a miserable November at the club. But, since then they have won 12 and drawn two of their 14 games, with a penalty shootout defeat to Pennington in the Hospital Cup the only blot on their copybook.

And after a 4-0 victory on Saturday at Crooklands Casuals the manager says their biggest enemy over the run-in is the sheer number of games they have to get through.

“We deserved that win, massively,” said Pennington. “I can’t complain about anything the lads are doing, and we’re still picking up results with a few missing.

“I think we had up to 11 players out last weekend and due to a massive backlog we’re resigned to the first and second teams playing every few days.

“Our older lads are doing a good job but their bodies just aren’t built for it any more. With seven games left it’s a massive few weeks for us.

“We won’t be looking forward beyond the next game though. We’ll look to keep winning, keep chalking off the games and hope it will be enough to do it.”

CMB’s utility man, Callum Yearsley got them under way at Crooklands, firing in a first-time volley from outside the box, and Micky Ford’s neat finish made it 2-0 with just 10 minutes gone.

It took until the last 15 minutes before Tom Healey, who has had his season disrupted by a series of injuries, found the top corner for the third goal.

The ever-reliable Matty Chapman completed a good day’s work with his 13th goal in 12 starts and 11 sub outings this term.

“I said to the lads when we lost to Hurst Green we’d probably have to go the rest of the season unbeaten, and they’ve done that,” added the manager.

“We believe we’re a club on the up – I’m adamant we are good enough to get promoted this year. The team spirit is buzzing, there were 20 or 30 lads out watching the seconds play last week, and Danny Swailes [former Bury and MK Dons defender] said to me it’s the best dressing room he’s been in through his career.

“I believe, with the strength in depth at the club, we’re the best in the division.”

Stoneclough took a point from a 1-1 draw with GSK Ulverston Rangers on Saturday but were defeated 2-1 at Lostock St Gerards on Monday night.

Eagley also drew at the weekend, as Danny Holroyd and Lee Bancroft were on target in a 2-2 draw at home to title-chasing Poulton.

In the Premier Division Turton beat Euxton Villa 3-1, with Kieron Sisson hitting two goals, one from the spot, and Steve Fitton the other.

In Division Two Ladybridge were defeated 3-0 by Lostock St Gerard’s reserves.
