AFTER completing their campaign with an unusual double-header victory, outgoing Blackrod manager Iain Froggatt says the club will be in safe hands when they kick off next season.

Froggatt’s side eased the fixture congestion by completing the campaign with home-and-away fixtures against Roach Dynamos on the same day, winning 2-0 and 4-1 to boost their final points tally.

Matty Davies and John Fielding hit the goals in the first 60-minute game at Blackrod Community Centre.

Although Alex Leigh was shown a red card in that match, the quick turnaround meant he received no ban and could take to the field when the teams made their way to Darnhill for the reverse match, in which Davies, Sammy Cardwell, Jake Ross and Jimmy Winteringham all scored.

And now that the campaign – his last at Greenbarn Way – has drawn to a close, Froggatt feels Blackrod have under-achieved, given the talent in the squad.

“I’m not that happy with our ninth place,” he said. “It could have been higher but we had a game against Rossendale abandoned when we were winning and we’ve been told it won’t be replayed now.

“I’m disappointedwith the season, I felt our strongest side could give any of the teams in this league a real game.

“We lost 2-1 to Mostonians, who have won the league, and they said we were the best team they’ve played, so it’s been a poor season for us.

“I don’t think I’ve been able to name the same team for two games in a row at all, that’s been the story of our season and why we haven’t been able to get any consistency.”

Addressing that problem will not be Froggatt’s problem next season, however, as he is taking a break from the rigours of management, with former manager Jack Paton once again accepting the challenge of leading Blackrod.

“I’m having to pack it in,” he added.

“I’ve got a young lad I want to see enjoy his football so I’m leaving and Jack is going to take the reins, I know the team will be in good hands with him.”

Elsewhere, Horwich St Mary’s Victoria were beaten 4-0 at home to Mostonians.

In the Manchester League Premier Division Bolton County finished their season on a high, with a 5-0 home win against Manchester Gregorians. Romain Maubaret netted twice and Tom Axon-Smith, Danny Hill and Dimitri Wasaulua also scored for County, who had Tom Aspen sent off.
