Will Anelka offer be too much to resist?

SAMMY Lee is drawing up plans to cover for the departure of Nicolas Anelka.

It looks increasingly likely that the much-travelled Frenchman - Wanderers record signing and top scorer - will be on his travels again before the transfer window closes in 11 days. Manchester United have now emerged as favourites to lure Anelka away from the Reebok and, if the pundits are proved right, £12million is an offer the Whites owner Eddie Davies and chairman Phil Gartside will find impossible to refuse.

Lee admitted the situation could be beyond his control when he said: "You don't want to lose quality players but other things dictate.

"It would be remiss of me to get involved in the speculation, but all I would say is that everybody's aware of his qualities and we are just making sure we have the right preparation, to cover for every eventuality."

At such a late stage, however, Wanderers will have to act swiftly to sign an adequate replacement for Anelka, who topped the Reebok goal charts last season and has already shown his world class by scoring two of their three goals this season - the latest coming in Saturday's 3-1 defeat at Portsmouth.

That third successive loss left Wanderers pointless and piled even more pressure on Lee, who is already having sleepless nights as he sets about implementing the changes he felt were necessary when he took charge after Sam Allardyce walked away at the end of last season.

But Wanderers' fans, who might be willing to give the new manager the time he has requested to get things right, will be furious if they see the club selling its star players without recruiting big name replacements. And, in that respect, Wanderers' transfer transactions up to now this summer have not suggested a willingness to pay big fees.

However, if Anelka is sold, Lee should at least have sufficient funds to trawl the top end of the market. But time is not on his side.

There has been no confirmation of United's interest, but Sir Alex Ferguson, who was linked with Anelka earlier this summer, is reported to be ready to pay £12m to strengthen his strike squad in the wake of Wayne Rooney's latest injury setback.

Portsmouth and West Ham have also made overtures and there have been reports that Arsenal, where Anelka built his world class reputation, and Spanish giants Sevilla are also reported to be keen. But, if he does mean business, the United chief has the power to blow the competition out of the water.

Anelka was grateful to Wanderers for bringing him back to the Premiership when they paid a club record £8million to sign him from Fenerbahce a year ago, but he has made no secret of his desire to play Champions League football again and showcase his talents on the big stage.

Nicky Hunt meanwhile, is hoping nothing comes of the latest speculation. "Obviously we want him to stay because he's a goalscorer and he'll score goals for us. But we'll just have to see what happens," the Whites' full-back said.

Hunt is confident, however, that the experienced French international will not be unsettled by the transfer talk.

"He's mentally tough enough to realise that the team he is playing for now is Bolton Wanderers," he added.

"Whoever he is linked with and wherever he may go in the future, this club is paying his wages and he's got to perform at the highest level, no matter what happens on the outside. "He's a tough enough player to do that."

Abdoulaye Faye is expected to complete a £2m move to Newcastle this week after making it clear to Wanderers that he wants to join former boss, Sam Allardyce, on Tyneside.

Of course those two destroyers of the club would find it impossible to resist anything that would amount to no net spending. They should follow Anelka out of the club.

IF Anelka goes LSL would do better spending the money on our defence to replace TBH and Faye. Clean sheets will guarantee you points, another goalscorer gives you nothing if we are letting in 2 or 3 goals a game.
It's the same old story, any money we make goes to gartside and his bumchums it isn't reinvested in the team.
If they don't spend the money they make everyone should demand refunds of season tickets and refuse to go to games - why should we pay out a high percentage of our earnings to make them rich without getting anything in return.

What good would a replacement do. Even if he scored a couple of goals a game, the defence let in more than that each time we take to the pitch.

what i don't understand is that only four weeks ago, phil gartside played down the idea that the press had, about anelka moving to arsenal, velencia, manchester united and even sh1ty city supposed to have had a bid, so come on my fellow wanderers, don't believe what you read in any of the papers or on the TV for that matter, its just to rubbish our team because it would suit them if we went down because its what they have been predicting since last seasons bolton manager left, that was last season !!!! this season we have rookie manager that is still learning and 11 new players with only 90% fittness !!!!

If Anelka goes it is a pointless excercise even trying to find a replacement-as for a realistic fee- no one exists. Lee would be better served strengthening the defence with real quality and abandoning any thoughts of 4-4-2. Even if Nico stays we should revert to 4-3-3, but if he exists then more so. Diouf or Davies would be deployed as a lone striker.

Let's get some experienced, familiar faces at the back. Meite and Faye with Campo sat in front, they are familiar with each other, Faye is solid and good in the air, which is what we need plus he is a leader. Call off the Faye sale to N/Castle tell Faye that he is contracted to BWFC and that he is not going anywhere. If i told my bosses at work that i couldn’t work today because i had been for an interview the other day and my head wasn't write i would be hung drawn and quartered. Meite is better playing alongside Faye and we can still play the football through Campo. Campo will revel in a crisis such as this and i believe he loves the club. We have enough going forward and just need to tighten up at the back.

On another note where the hell is all the money? Not just this years extra SKY money but all the extra money we have earned over the last few seasons when finishing in the top 8 but only budgeting for 17th - remember an extra £500k each place higher up the table?

If we do sell Anelka for £12 million to the scum how much will Little Sammy get to spend? Probably £2-£3 million at most – it stinks.

One of the problems is that we have been too tolerant with Gartside and let him get away with too much over the years, tickets fiascos, missing cash whilst having a stagnant debt level, Okocha lies revealed on Panorama, annual lies over fake potential signings that are conveniently revealed around the time that season tickets go on sale, I could go on and on.

Let’s give Little Sammy these next 2 games if we lose them im sorry but move over and let someone else have a go, for now though enough of the talk Sammy let’s see how badly you want this job.

There is no reason to get rid of our best player who has 3 years left on his contract. The argument is, he wont play well if we force him to stay - Then he wont get in the French team at the Euros. We have control here, 12 million is too cheap, Bent went for 16 mill and Watford have put 60 million tag on King. We bottle it as soon as someone wants to leave.
If we get 10 or 12 million for him, every door we knock on and ask how much for......? the answer will be 10 million. So whats the point, we will have to swap him for someone worse.

I totally agree 'where has the money gone'!!

Selling anelka will not help the club whatsoever, so you get £10 mill for him, who is possible going to come in as a replacement. (What proven premeiership striker are you going to entice?!)

I remember LSL being told he would have a small warchest for signings (about 10 million), where has this gone?

I total agree with king cain, this club has no respect for its fans whatsoever, this is why i didnt renew my season ticket!

Campo should come back in,
i am liking LSL ambition of changing the style, but it needs to be baby steps.

Message to the board:

Anelka to go nowhere.
Spend some money on a desent RB, CB and Forward.

3 bad losses - games
3 bad losses - players

BWFC fans are the most loyal in the country.

The board need to prioritise - what is really important? The money or the football?

Yes, BWFC needs money to survive, but a football club is so much more than a business.

If that (business and money)is what the board considers the most important, then supporters should be chasing them out, not the manager.

Anelka and Jussi needs to stay. If they are allowed to leave, what message is it showing to the loyal fans?!!

Be loyal to the fans, Gartside, not your bank account!

That should be first - not keeping a healthy bank balance, considering the appropriate type of adverts boards, betting, corporate hospitality...

The central policy,i believe, is to clear the bank debt in order to make the club more attractive to potential buyers. Even a relegated club, free of debt, would be unlikely to deter interest. From this season clubs receive £30m if they go down!

joannebk, bolton says...
3:38pm Mon 20 Aug 07

I pray that barbarossa isnt right, but I fear that he is.

The fans, therefore, need to decide how to proceed as a result.

Is it time to organise protests around the ground? Get the attention of the press?

The KOP have showed how 'fan power' can be utilised to dramatic effect. Could it be done at the Reebok?

Blaming the manager, referee, individual players (although Hunt has GOT to improve his game) is not going to be enough to bring about change.

The Reebok needs to get vocal.

Just when you think it can't get any worse - this appears on Sky sports website

El Hadji Diouf is eager to leave Bolton and join a club with UEFA Champions League ambitions.

The Trotters are currently bottom of the Premier League table with no points from three games and Diouf has already vented his frustration this season after being left out of the starting line-up for the defeat to Newcastle.

The Senegal forward claims he is wanted by five clubs but he is keen to consider his options and make the right move.

Tottenham, Celtic and Lyon have all been linked with Diouf and the 26-year-old is keen to go to a club involved in Europe's premier club competition.

But Diouf is also aware that it could be difficult to secure a quick transfer as Bolton value him at £10million.

He explained: "I have five clubs who want me but I don't want to go for going. I want to go to somewhere where I will be happy.

"But Bolton want a lot of money for me. They are asking for £10million.

"I want to play in the Champions League or with a club that wants to be there next season."

Rat trying to leave sinking ship

Times are not too good for Bolton Wanderers. Early on in the Permiership season they are bottom of the table, haven’t scored a point, and now, their serial spitter wants to leave. Celtic, Tottenham and Lyon have all been linked by Senegal international El-Hadji Diouf, to their own detriment at that.

Diouf has revealed he wants to leave Bolton for a club with Champions League ambitions and thinks that the club is intentionally overvaluing him so he can’t leave.

Diouf claims that Tottenham, Celtic and Lyon have all made bids, as have two other mystery clubs.

"Bolton want a lot of money for me. They are asking for 10m pounds. I want to play in the Champions League or with a club that wants to be there next season." – Diouf

“Wants to be there next season”, that must sting if you are a Bolton supporter. And judging by the teams performances, you can see that attitude on the pitch as well. But you have to stay together to climb from a hole and clearly Diouf can’t be bothered. When a player starts this kind of talk, get rid of him. He’s a bad influence on the team and generally has a nasty disposition. I would never have signed him in the first place, regardless of what he has achieved.

i see you have not read all of Dioufs comment. Diouf made it clear he would only have a long-term future at the Reebok Stadium if the club spent heavily rather than cashing in on its best players.

He said: "If Nicolas goes I will be very disappointed. We need to keep Nico as for three years we have been doing very well. We need to go up to the next level and keep our good players as well as buying some more.

"We need to have a big squad so we need to get five good players in. We need to find big players. We have missed Tal Ben Haim but we also need midfielders and strikers.

"This season we have the Carling Cup, the FA Cup and the UEFA Cup as well as the Premier League so we need a big squad.

"We don't have a big squad like last season and I'm not happy about that. I want to play in a good team."

Diouf did have some words of encouragement for Bolton fans however.

He said: "We are not happy to have made a start to the season like this but we got out of a similar position under Sam Allardyce two years ago. Now we have a new manager, things are not going well but we just have to keep working hard.

"Sammy Lee is a different guy but he's a good manager. We are not having much luck under him now.

"I have known him for a long time since he was head coach at Liverpool under Gerard Houllier. But for the first game he put me on the bench - I don't know why. When I came on I did well every time to prove I want to do well."

Looking at the end of last season, we shipped 24 goals in Big Sam's last 10 games. In fact, we won only 4 games in 2007 - all of these were against bottom half teams, two of which were relegated.

In other words, our current form is a continuation in a run that started when we lost to Liverpool on Jan 1st. My theory is that Big Sam, failing to sign any decent players over Christmas, realised that the loss against Liverpool meant no Ch League football. Big Sam got the hump and Bolton went into freefall. Little Sam has tried to put on the breaks, but with no success so far.

Without Big Sam's leadership we have discovered that we do not have the defensive players needed to stay in the Premiership. We must sell Anelka and buy a few solid defenders ASAP. Then we can rebuild with Little Sam at the helm.

I might be the only one on here who thinks this but if the likes of Diouf, Anelka, Jussi and Faye want to leave let them. LSL has no chance to play the way bolton should be if there is internal problems. If they don't want to be at the club get rid. The players are trying to look good and say they don't want to leave but i believe if they were truly honest the draw of big money is the real reason they are leaving. Faye has obviously been tapped up by barcodes and Anelka's bro has probably been touting him like he did at every other club he was at. Get rid of them and lets try to build a strong team spirit and win some games with players that want to wear the badge with pride.

At the end of the day it comes down to this, and this alone.

Sammy Lee is the manager and (according to Gartside) will have the club's backing. In which case, Sammy should put his managerial foot down, tell Faye/Diouf/Anelka they are needed and wanted here, and are going nowhere. Then let that be the end of it.

Otherwise, we'll know the Chairman is having the say, or Sammy doesn't have the clout he thinks he has.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Anelka go because he has touted himself to other clubs in the last 12 months , not just now! , The guy is out for himself, he ain't bothered about the Bolton fans. As for Diouf , Diouf want's to see quality coming in , not average players at best. Were is the money going? , it's a joke , even Derby have spent more. And we think we could get Champions League football. No chance. The money spent in summer is around 4 million. We got 7 million in prize money , 1 million off Birmingham because Jaidi's deal included it , that's 8 miliion already. Then the sky money on top. It's time to spend 10 to 15 million on 3/4 top drawer players from Europe , then we may see real progress. Spend Peanuts , you get monkeys. As for Sam Allardyce , just goes to show how good he was , working with no money. Sammy Lee isn't ready , he is already out of his depth. As for Saturday , we will get beat , Reading are organised , have some spirit and knowhow , i wish i hadn't wasted my money on season tickets!!!!!!

Phil please go and the rest of the board with you. Anelka said he would onli go to a champions leauge club. The onli way man u would sign him is if they got rid of saha.so i reckon we should do a swap for saha and 10 million and get eidur on loan. the strikeforce will b sorted and diouf if he wants to go let him go 2 celtric 4 10 mill and get macgeady as he is a sh*t hot winger.and if he goes to spurs then ask 4 one of there wingers malbrank?then we av 20 million on our hands.keep jussi for goals let faye go 4 2 million.Walter Samuel from Inter? Silvestre from man u?dont 4 get sammy lee has inherited this team.its no his fault we signed Cid that was B Sam and wasni his fault Ben hiam left. If u luk at how we played at the end of last season we were never great.5-1 against boro,4-1 spurs apart from a struggling wigan side last year who was the last team we beat in the prem??

To be quite honest I can see diouf's point of view. What is the blody point if we are not going to build on what we have - top 8 for the last three seasons, where should be be aiming for now? Upwards! But how the hell are we going to do that by selling our best players? What is the bloody point? Lee will be written off because come the end of the transfer window we will have gotten rid of three of our best players from last season an I bet he won't have been able to spend any of the money coming in.

If Faye goes which looks very much likely how about Papa Bouba Diop? He has said he wants to play for a Champions League or UEFA club.

Problem is if we are not careful he'll be playing for a Champion-ship club!

It's the same old story, any money we make goes to gartside and his bumchums it isn't reinvested in the team. If they don't spend the money they make everyone should demand refunds of season tickets and refuse to go to games - why should we pay out a high percentage of our earnings to make them rich without getting anything in return.
what i don't understand is that only four weeks ago, phil gartside played down the idea that the press had, about anelka moving to arsenal, velencia, manchester united and even sh1ty city supposed to have had a bid, so come on my fellow wanderers, don't believe what you read in any of the papers or on the TV for that matter, its just to rubbish our team because it would suit them if we went down because its what they have been predicting since last seasons bolton manager left, that was last season !!!! this season we have rookie manager that is still learning and 11 new players with only 90% fittness !!!! BE PATIENT WHITEMEN .
BE PATIENT!!!!! Stop making excuses for what essentially has been one of the worst moves in the history of Bolton Wanderers. We shouldnt have even employed a ROOKIE MANAGER. He sees positives in getting battered the guy is a sadist I think. Course we will cash in on Anelka and Diouf and bring in sum one like Duncan Ferguson and some other nobody to replace them. U cant afford to be patient u gotta act. We have Europe to play in too. With out Diouf and Anelka we have a Championship quality squad. Can u not actually see whats happening?

Ok the people who dont trust gartside (who apparently got us in the top8) shud shut up! Yeah good one mate I think u'll find that Sam Allardyce and his staff picked the teams not the guy who employed a man with no managerial experience then started slating the man he used to adore. Jonny Boy, Bolton says...
8:23pm Mon 20 Aug 07

I only used Leeds as an example. But Allardyce took over when we werent really doing that well and got the chance to prove himself in a lower league then make the step up. We r in Europe had top ten finishes for the past few seasons. Hardly the same as what Allardyce had to contend with. Gartside jus employed sammy lee on the cheap as he was desperate for a managing job. Thought this guy wont give us any trouble. And obviously wont have demanded a high wage. We cud hav gone 4 Sven 4 god's sake. It is not a good idea to employ a novice at top level football. Especially when he makes sum of the worst signings ever. Then looks at getting rid of the stars. I had fans of Middlesborough and Everton who I know wetting themselves at the news of Mccann and Helguson. The guy has played Nolan up front and right wing. Not really famed for either is he?! Frankly it will break my heart if we go down but unless something drastic stops the rot then its Titanic FC all the way.

Are the fans being taken for mugs? This has happened before - remember Rivaldo boosting season ticket sales? What we are implying here is that fans bought (and are buying) tickets based on seeing a quality team includng Anelka and co. battling for Europe, whilst Gartside and co are hapilly making millions to fill the coffers. I have already voted with my feet, deliberately not attending the first 3 games (and more) until the intentions of the club are clear - the Championship and financial stability or to compete in the premiership....I work too hard for my money to pass it over to the Gartside retirement fund!

On Sky Sports News, i don't know how many have noticed that they regularly show you the headlines from the local n/papers for a vast majority of the top flight clubs. Over the years i have noticed in this feature that we are one of about 2/3 clubs in the whole of the Prem that has a local n/paper that will not criticise the club. This is another reason why Gartslime has managed to get away with what he has for years. Why wont the Bolton News show some back bone and say it how it is? apply some pressure for gods sake, print some facts. Sharrock has a special relationship with the club he never speaks up for the fan, how many decades has this guy been reporting? Have you ever heard a controversial comment from him? NO. Other clubs have local papers for the local people. Can we from now on refer to Gartside as Gartslime from now on or should it be Gart(Dark)side?

The differance is Allerdyce had managerial experience all be it in Ireland then in lower league but he had it. SL has none and as for the fat one sanctioning signings please give me a break man. Djorkieff free Jay Jay free so come on I'd let him sign them too.I have to be honest cos I live in the south west now I don't read much in the press about BWFC cos as some of you had said we were doing ok, although I have never like the fat controller. I've just sent this to Mr Sharrock. Too polite I know, but at least he might read it if I don't call him a tosser in the first sentence. Sharrock

Mr Sharrock

For many years now you have been a sports journalist employed by the Bolton News, covering, among other things presumably, Bolton Wanderers FC.

The club is passing through quite a turbulent phase at the moment, with Sammy Lee under pressure to get results, the best players seemingly up for grabs and fans becoming more and more agitated and disillusioned.

I would have thought that this would be a wonderful opportunity for someone in your position to indulge in some fairly cutting edge investigative journalism. A chance to really get the low-down on what or what isn't going on. A chance to question the likes of Mr Gartside and challenge him. A chance to let the Bolton public know what is happening behind the scenes. It’d even be great for the Wanderers supporting public to know that at least an attempt had been made to get answers to the questions that they all want the management at the club to be asked.

But no, we get none of this. We get banal nonsense day in and day out. Sometimes we don't even get that - today, Tuesday 21 August, not a single new article on the Bolton News website, Wanderers page.

I would never be so rude as to suggest that the symbiotic relationship that the Bolton News has with the local football club is purposely not being jeopardised by any serious reporting of the issues that concern the local populous. However, I will suggest that you do your readership a favour and indulge in a little real journalism for once instead of pushing the same old dreary nonsense day in and day out.

Regards

Anelka, Diuof & Faye don't really want to go - they're being hawked around - no-ones buying at present - the price is too high - wait till 31st Aug - then the price will tumble as Gartside & Davies are desperate for the cash.

Don't imagine there's anyone else coming in - LSL hasn't time to find quality replacements - he will be left to stagger on with the cast-offs & old men he already has - when the worst comes to the worst LSL will be blamed & take the rap
